Uncivil Defence
University of Auckland
The New Zealand Civil Defence guide is full of very important, yet practical advice for dealing with extreme weather events. But what about the emotional aftermath?

The University of Auckland’s Growing Up in New Zealand study found that so many of our teenagers are still struggling after the major flooding events of 2023, which saw catastrophic damage across the country. And it’s easy to see why. Homes lost forever, financial pressures put on families and the constant fear it could happen again.

Introducing: Uncivil Defence. New Zealand’s Civil Defence guide, completely reimagined for teenagers. Helping our young people process the trauma of a natural disaster while preparing for the next one.

This reworked guide contains all the practical advice from the New Zealand Government, interwoven with skills for dealing with your emotions. Practices that were advised and overseen by the University of Auckland’s Psychology Department.

In a natural disaster, you feel anything but civil. So this body of work was artworked in an eclectic art direction style that reflected the range of emotions our young people are feeling. Interwoven with beautiful messages of support from their favourite Kiwi musicians, and a selection of vouchers so they could stock up on essentials to help them feel prepared.

This guide was distributed to thousands of teenagers around New Zealand, and serves as a shining example of Auckland University imparting critical information in a way that’s relevant to its audience.
